Self Improvement is truly subjective. What one thinks is making them better may be seen as a detriment to others. With that being said, here are some ways to help improve various areas of your life.
Take what Is For You
With all of the suggestions given today make sure you add to your life what works. Sometimes in these think pieces/blogs we often assume that everything applies and it doesn’t. You will know what is for you as it resonates with your lifestyle.
What are you Listening to?
I have been a complete advocate for podcasts. One I’m a podcaster now but they depending on what you choose to listen to can be a great source of help. For instance, I have several episodes that speak to being a solo entrepreneur. Goodpods featured mine and 6 others that are great for business minded.
Also keep in mind, some podcasts for entertainment is just as good too. Laughter is good for the soul! So don’t count out entertainment as a form of self improvement. Some people are stressed out that laughing is something they don’t feel they are entitled to! It’s almost as if they haven’t earned the right to laugh and enjoy life.
Here are my favorite podcasts according to areas of self improvement. All are on Goodpods:
- Parenting: The Suga by Tika Sumpter and Thai Randolph
- Mental Health: 7 Good Minutes
- Relationships: Is it going to cause an argument by Marcus and Angel Tanksley
- Relationships: Dead Ass with Khadeen and Devale Ellis
- Entertainment: Turn to your Neighbor and Ratchet and Respectable by Demetria L. Lucas
Getting Organized
I for one can’t do much in my home or around me if my space isn’t organized. This may not be your plight. However there is some benefits to finding a better way to organize your life. A few suggestions is with your mail and finances. Not opening your mail because you’re not able to pay the bills that are coming in isn’t going to help you in the long run. Open the mail. Know where you stand. Attempt to make a plan of attack where you can.
Pantry/ Kitchens
It’s amazing how we don’t know what expired food is in our house. If you’re trying to improve your eating and diet, clean your fridge. Organize your food so you can purchase the healthier options you need. This will help you in your goals. Little things like a clean fridge and an organized pantry will do wonders for your new outlook.
Clean your Home
This is something we are all aware that must be done. People who are experiencing great mental distress may not be able to do. This is why shows like Hoarders exist. There’s a mental breakdown that occurs that shows up in areas like eating, the cleanliness of their home, etc. Getting the clutter out of your home, is helpful.
This level of organization sheds days, weeks, months, or even years off of your life in a good way! If you’re struggling to do this, get help. I don’t mean someone cleaning your home although I’m not against it, but possibly therapy to help you rid of the layers that you are holding.
Shop your Closet
Have a real conversation with yourself. Sometimes the clothes that we are holding on is holding up space in your closet and your mindset. Own your size. It’s hard trust me I know. Wear the clothes that fit you well. We have outfits we haven’t worn and we don’t know about because our closets aren’t organized. It may be time to gift/give some of your clothes away. Note: please only give away clean clothes that are in good condition. Give what you would be willing to receive!
Journaling As Self Improvement
I have some journals from high school. I’m able to see some patterns that I have either gotten past or things I still need help in. Journaling is a way to organize your thoughts. It’s a way to place anger or frustrations in a healthy light. Journaling doesn’t solve your problems. It’s a way to write and attempt to either give clarity or help to find a solution. Journaling can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be. Some of the most success people start their day with journaling. Ask Sydney Wong aka David Adams’ new book, How to have a good Day!
Reading can Help with Self Improvement
Books can be a great way to help improve your life. Where some can’t get what they need in a podcast or journaling; others can get it from reading. Books is an information highway. Some of my favorite books come in all types of subjects. Here are my favorite books:
- Professional Troublemaker: The Fear Fighter Manual by Luvvie Ajayi Jones
- We’re going to need more wine by Gabrielle Union
- The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae
- Woman Evolve Break up your fears and Revolutionize your life by Sarah Jakes Roberts
Visit your Doctor
A few years ago I embarked on a healthy journey. I visited my doctors for a full evaluation. This meant my regular doctor, ONGYN, eye doctors, and dentist. I wanted a full work up of where I was in my overall health. This concept that what you don’t know won’t hurt you is a lie. What you don’t know will hurt you. Being honest with yourself and being honest with your doctors is key. Speaking up about what you are experiencing will aid you in getting better.
There are many other areas you can have a plan of attack. There are a million and own ways to initiate self improvement. Therapy, accountability partners, going back to school or learning a trade, etc. So be open to the things you can do to help you improve. Remember that others around you can be an asset but you are essentially the one in control. No mate or friend can be responsible for your mental, emotional, and physical health. Do the best you can to show up for yourself daily!
