This high spirited and high energy performance brings together the past by declaring a call to action for the future. TJ loves Sally 4 Ever is a play that sheds light on racism as it exists not only in the world but in higher learning. The notion that once you become educated you would be considered to walk into the promise land sometimes is cringe worthy. Often times the very institution as depicted in the production are named after the very slave owners and their descendants. How do you make your voice heard in such times? Theatre Horizon is the perfect location engrossed in the rich history of Norristown to tell this story.
Knowledge is Power
The many Black students that are sold the dream that college is the way to academic achievement. Many are usually held by a double edge sword. Go away to school and become better. Help those behind you to do the same. We have sometimes the toughest times on campus. It could be as simple as having to adhere to the principles of the school. Sometimes it could be as large as not feeling fully supported by the staff who don’t understand them. I personally went to a predominantly White school and it was two different worlds trying to blend in. One of the parts that stuck out to me was when Pam and Annette were given tours. The chime of the bell represented the women’s ability to code switch.
Most Black people understand the code switch very fluently. I remember being an ambassador for my campus and having to show the students the buildings. It can be disturbing when you realize that the buildings represent some of the worse in history. Before anyone reading this suggests that you choose the school you go to keep in mind there are many factors such as financial aid that goes into the decision process. Watching both women and “seeing” myself for the first time was an amazing experience.
Inheritance
We inherit pain. It could also be an inheritance of the “Black Tax” too. Either way there is an expense. Sally played by Sydney Banks was electrifying. Her dynamic with the other actors/actresses was absolutely stellar. When she was being pursued by her teacher, and dean, TJ her ability to encompass a wide range of emotions was undeniable. Her relation to TJ was definitely modeling the behavior of what happened to Sally Hemming. Although there were many moments of fun and laughter, the raw emotion of having our persons subjected to abuse was raw and real.
Teaching Moments
There were so many teaching moments and nuggets of knowledge dropped. For instance when Harold was attempting to school Dean TJ on the history of the buildings. He ended paying a price far above what he bargained for. The way that people view standing up for what is right is so close to the many times in history Black people have taken a stand. I also enjoyed the probates that is seen in Black Fraternities and Sororities. I too wanted to become a member of BBE. Also let’s not forget the parties which brings its level of moments.
So will you go into the Promise Land? What world are you curating for the future? How will you become a part of that future? There are some thoughts to consider. Also no audience has been as interactive as they were at Theatre Horizon. If this is how intensive their productions are, I need to be in the building every time. I loved how the audience had no issues talking back. This production was layered and to the genius that is James IJames, a personal round of applause is deserved. Theatre Horizon tackled this in a way I have never seen before.
