The Play that goes Wrong is a play within a play. I promise you that out of all of the years I have reviewed theatre productions this is hands down in my top 3. This hilarious production combines the best elements of comedic timing, fun, and whimsical mastery all in one show. If you missed this, you miss everything.
Before you go to see The Play that Goes Wrong
I would suggest like with most shows that you show up at least 30 minutes before. I preface this if you have to drive and find parking that this timing will be necessary to secure it and get settled. In addition, the bar is available one hour before the show, as well as at Intermission. You will need a theatre approved cup in order to bring your drink or snacks into the theatre. Bathrooms are all gender so be mindful of that should you bring children.
I highly recommend that if you bring a child that they would be over the age of 10 if not a teenager. Although the language isn’t overly or riddled with curse words there are a few adult themes. Should you have to bring a kid just know that a lot of the punch lines may go over there head. The show is about 2 hours and ends May 21, 2023.
The Murder at Haversham Manor
As stated earlier this is a play within a play. The audience is taken on a journey to solve a whodunit crime. From the first scene to the last, it is full of humor. I laughed out loud with hesitation. Simple mishaps that turn into clues, and opens the world of backstage misfortunes to the forefront of the story. Every person you see in this production will feed off of each other in terms of energy and more. Do not be surprised if you feel like you missed a clue or more. Nothing is like it seems. There will be moments where you jump, or flinch from the action.
Present Day Innuendos in The Play that Goes Wrong
Although this story takes place in 1922 you can’t help but see strong references to modern phenoms. Plays on words is strong and useful in showcasing this ever budding story. To describe it I would say Mad Libs married Whose Line is it Anyway but had an affair with Saturday Night Live and no ones knows who the Father is. Provocake, timely, and unfinished beauty are the words I would use to describe the show. I haven’t seen anything like it. I rank it high because every actor/ actress involved made it easy to do.
Set Design in The Play that Goes Wrong
You will see that the set is also a character of the story. Everyone and everything hinges around the scenes and set. I loved the way the set worked with and against each actor/actress. At first when parts of the set seemed to be unhinged I thought that production would stop or that someone on stage would have a look of worry but it didn’t happen. Once i got on to what was happening I was still pleasantly surprised on how well uncertainty is the highlight of the show. Certain aspects of the set really made me think or gasp.
What to Expect in The Play that Goes Wrong
No matter what review you read including this, remember one thing, come with an open mind. The outpouring of hilarious is so mesmerizing that the only way this makes sense is if you are in the seats ready to explore. Pay attention from the time you start seeing people on the stage until the lights come on. Most importantly who knew death could bring so much joy.
