This is a truly mesmerizing and completely phenomenal showcase of what theatre is. I was completely blown away from start to finish. The show kept a great pace and from the musical aspect and the only regret that I have from seeing the show was not seeing it sooner. Part taken from Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew this musical of what relationships were like in the late 40s was wonderfully produced. So, here’s to another Op’nin’!
What to expect at Kiss me Kate
This show is not intended for a younger audience. It would be a great for teenagers as there are many adult themes throughout. In addition to adult themes there are times when acts of violence against the Kate played by Jennie Eisenhower. Many could feelthat it is offensive. It does fit with the times of the production. The show itself is 2 hours and 45 minutes with one intermission. I promise you that it doesn’t feel long at all.
Parking is nearby on the street and at the lot across from the theatre. We had zero issues finding parking. FYI get there early which I didn’t do when I saw it. I had to wait until intermission to get concessions. They have great selections too.
My favorite part of Kiss me Kate
The singing was phenomenal. Honestly, this cast far exceeded by expectations. From the first note to the last it was a 10/10 performances. One of the performances and performer that stuck out to me was Ian Coulter-Buford. It was something about his stage presence, humor, and wit that did it for me. That is not to say that all the other great actors didn’t do their part. He just shinned during his number, Too Darn Hot. That one performance made me sit straight up in my seat. It was the power in Ian’s voice and the entire ensemble’s showcasing of dance that sealed it for me.
The Creatives of Kiss me Kate
This show couldn’t have run the way it did without the mastermind of the Director, Todd Underwood. I found this show to be my top five of the shows that I have seen in 2024. Again, my only regret is not seeing earlier as I would have seen this show again. It ends January 5th. Each creative in their perspective brought in such freshness to this production. The costumes were vibrant as well as the music becoming its own character. If you love a musical with a great band this is the show for you.
Kiss me Kate’s Star Power
There is Kate, who struggles with her ex-husband, Fred Graham (Petruchio) played by Chris Cherin. This is such a realistic demonstration of what it is like to be in the presence of someone you are in love with but have lost your way. Their marriage although there are layered reasons had strained them so much that being in the same room was chaotic at best.
Both actors played their part in such a way that honestly, we just happened to be in a room watching the banter of a couple and not a stage production. The interchanging of dialogue in their on-stage characters. They are playing characters of characters.
Stand out Actress
Renee McFillin’s portrayal of Lois Lane and Bianca Minola was amazing. I sat in the premium seats close to the stage. That closeness allowed me to hear every note. Renee hit her notes with such ease. My favorite song was Tom, Dick, or Harry. This song is still stuck in my head. Not just on the play of words but just how well it was done. Her acting brought the entire story to the forefront. You have Jennie Eisenhower character of Kate who is attempting to get married to her secret man of the military while distancing herself from her ex.
Then there is Renee who is attempting to “tame” her casino wild boyfriend but also make her stance on how she chooses to “live” her life. The dynamics that unfold in this production made for great conversations with my daughter who I took with me.
Kiss me Kate is a must See
Quintessence Theatre Group has always been a theatre who attracts such excellent quality actors and actresses. Every time I come; I am blown away at how well they transform the space to fit each production. This is my number show that I have seen in all the years at Quintessence. Every actor and actresses on the stage was great. The songs were perfectly executed. I enjoyed the entire production. It was colorful, engaging, and thought provoking on the value of women. Unfortunately, although we can’t sing a musical in real life the value of women still is strong today. One day we will allow women to pave their way without the patriarchy. Until then we can be like Kate and make the best decisions that work best for us.
The show sadly ends January 5th. Tickets are available The accolades that the show has garnered are well earned. Thank you to the entire staff at Quintessence Theatre for having me. Can’t wait for the next one.
