In the era of Zoom life The Wolves was pleasantly perfect while showcasing life for teenage girls as they matriculate through choices, politics, life, and their road to the championship. Like everything in life right now, you can view The Wolves in the comfort of your own home with a 48 hour link that makes it convenient to view and enjoy. Thank you Philadelphia Theatre Company.
Girl Talk
I might be showing my age but The Wolves minus the soccer championship, reminded me of the Board Game Girl Talk. I mean the topics were definitely a little more abrasive than the old school game but the same concept. Young girls learn the world through their friends and mistakes. It’s a hard lesson as I have my own tween it doesn’t make it any less true. I enjoyed it because I love keeping my ear to the ground of what’s going on. For any parent I would caution allowing anyone under the age of 13 watching. However you need to pay attention because the world is changing.
Let’s Talk
Anything you think a young girl is not discussing will definitely make you blush. Open and honest conversation, challenging your friends, dealing with harsh realities like pregnancy, Plan B pill, or even abortions is apart of growth. I never liked the idea that the world makes it seem as if we have to wait until a moment to have the next generation’s light come on and then get them ready for adulthood. The time is always present. If you do have a young adult this will be a great way to talk without making it too awkward.
Highlights
As I stated before this show gives you a 48 hour watch time with a link you can view socially distanced from home. If you need to stop for any reason during your 48 hour time it will pick up right where you left off! I viewed it on my laptop. You can watch it on your laptop, computer, or phone. It is pay as you go giving audience from all price points the ability to enjoy the theatre during this time. Written by Sarah DeLappe it features the directorial debut of Neil Bang-Jensen. It features 9 actresses from Philadelphia and New York. The production team had been working on this since Summer of 2019 only to have Covid-19 put a damper in the plans. However just like The Wolves soccer team, pivoting is apart of how life is managed.
Length of production: 90 minutes with no intermission
The Wolves is also a 2015 Kilroys List which highlights plays by women, trans, and non-binary playwrights.
You don’t have to be young person to understand what it’s like to want to win. The challenges of accomplishing a goal with life hurdles is one thing we ALL are navigating right now. This production is timely, provocative, and encouraging at the same time!
The Wolves is out now until December 20th. Its a great way to support the theatre as well as the amazing actresses and production team. I absolutely loved knowing that they did all of this on a green screen safely. The very things we didn’t have to think about navigating life is the one thing we have learned is resilience is monument.
