Grand Horizons

Grand Horizons is a hilariously funny story of an older married couple who have decided to divorce. In the midst of their divorce, the couple make a lot of realizations about what marriage. The ideal of what being a partner, and more mean to them has dramatically shifted. Also their adult children struggle with the acceptance of the demise of their 50 years together.

Healing through Laughter in Grand Horizons

This entire show will have you laughing. The jokes are meant to be for an older crowd. I would caution taking kids as there are a lot of verbiage that may not be suitable for them. For instance when talking about vibrators as the Carla (Bill’s girlfriend) has with Nancy (Bill’s current wife) will not be a conversation you may want to introduce to a teenager even. The conversation is important to have. Throughout the conversations that surround the demise of Bill (played by Peter DeLaurier) and Nancy’s (played by Marcia Saunders) marriage is the being satisfied and seen in a sexual way after 50 years. Anyone who has been married for at least 10 years or more know how challenging a marriage can be and is.

Children and Marriage in Grand Horizons

Marriage already comes with a listing of issues. I love the talk about what how kids view intimacy in a marriage. Kids should see intimacy being played out in front of them. There is a difference in being over sexual. However two people in love, showing that love not in a mechanical form is important. When these adult children, Brian (played by Brian McManamon), and Ben (played by Dante Alexander) struggle in their romance or future romances. At one point during a drunken night Nancy tells her youngest son, Brian see me not as your Mom but as a woman. Children don’t see their parents as human outside of an extension of their title. That moment had all of the women gasping near me. I felt seen in that moment too. We aren’t just Mothers but women who deserve to be seen, nurtured, and shall I say pleased?

Underlying Talks

This production will cause many conversations in the car. I called my own husband on the ride home to talk to him about some of the topics. For instance one part that moved me was when Nancy talked about an old flame. She never felt so invigorating after a night of pleasure with him. She was wrong in how she went about it. No one will debate it. However, if she was willing to talk about what she needed with Bill and he was receptive the amount of time wasted between them wouldn’t have been lost. The lost of time to be able to be who you really are meant to be and have that shown in your marriage would be such a beautiful thing. So many couples don’t know who their spouses are especially after having kids. This is why dating your spouse is so important.

Amazing Acting in Grand Horizons

Every actor and actresses brought in a level of acting that deserved a standing ovation. One of the best ways to know this is during intermission. I do this at every production. If people are willing to talk to strangers about what they saw, the actors and actresses are doing their job. At many People’s Light have sparked conversations but not as great as this. I met 2 widow women who shared some of their triumphs and downfalls during their marriage. Sharing some of the themes that resonated while they watched. I sat drinking wine and took in their advice. Another woman joined in and we talked so earnestly that we almost missed the call to come back.

I also have to shout out Jenelle Chu (played Jess, Ben’s Wife) and Luis Augusto (plays Tommy young man who came home with Brian), and Zuleyma Guevara (plays Carla, Bill’s girlfriend). They were so impactful. Although some would consider them to have had smaller parts the important stories that they brought to the stage were by far the most important parts. Great job by all of the actors and actresses.

Mushroom

I am always impressed by the hospitality at People’s Light. Thank you. After the production there was a free BBQ as well as live performers in conjunction of their new showing, Mushroom. This play is going to be both in Spanish and English. Showcasing stories of the community in Chester County. It starts September 14th. It is highly not recommended for anyone under the age of 16 as it has suggestive sexual and strong language. Get your tickets now. I enjoyed seeing so much in the culture and loved my food and drink with so many amazing authentic taco trucks.

Thank you to People’s Light and Carrie Gorn of Perpetual Motion PR for having me. Also the Fall schedule has also been announced. We love to see theater back. Although as of now, they are not checking vaccination cards, you are expected to wear a mask over your nose and mouth the entire time for everyone’s safety. Get your tickets for Grand Horizons now as it ends on August 28th.
