MJ the Musical is now playing in Philadelphia at the Ensemble Arts Philly from now until January 19, 2025. It is magnetic from the music, stage production, and so much more. It is age appropriate for children ages ten and up. However, come and relive the magical moments of the King of Pop.
What to Expect when seeing MJ, the Musical
It is about 2.5 hours long with one intermission. It is a high-powered production. There is some of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits woven into it as well. Expect you and the people around you to sing and dance. I say this because I saw a little mini disturbance of those taken back by it.
MJ the Musical is not one of those productions that you sit and simply watch. You become a part of it from as soon as it starts. You will notice at the start that there is no traditional open curtain call. So be prepared. Also, this is one of those shows that since it’s such a high-powered show, being in your seat is going to be important to not disturb others who came to have a fun time.
There are several concessions stands in the lobby and after ticket scanning. So, if one is busier than another keep that in mind. You will have to be prepared to go through security screening. Large bags may want to sit out this performance. I brought my wallet and left my whole bag at home. Also, there is a signature drink and that is called, Smash Hit. It is a red sangria. Whoever made our batch my goodness it was strong and well balanced. I only needed one drink after that one.
MJ the Musical
I saw the show in New York for our anniversary about 2 years ago I believe, and it was outstanding. One of the things that sets this show apart was the lead actor. At our performance MJ was played by Erik Hamilton. He was phenomenal and that was Elijah Rhea Johnson. He has a striking resemblance to Michael Jackson, and it was so strong it really made me take several double takes. However, I do love seeing it multiple times, but the issue is separating each of the actors. So let me tell you, Erik was so good. I loved his mannerisms, and his talent is undeniable.
The emotional Pull
There is a song that will tug at your hearts and that is the piece with Anastasia Talley who plays MJ’s mom. Her talent cannot be denied. I don’t care where you see MJ the Musical, they must have it in their contract that MJ mom must have chops. When I saw it in New York and Philly that performance has left a lasting stain on my mind and heart.
My husband couldn’t stop crying. He lost his mom 8 years ago and MJ and Katherine’s interaction is heart retching and beautiful at the same time. So be prepared. My mom is still hear and every time I have heard it, I want to call her and thank her for what she has done for me.
The Production Team is its own Character
They are unpaid actors. Just like with the real Michael Jackson the production must be strong in a play that is about his life. With me going to Ensemble Arts Philly it always amazes me what they can do with the stage. With the MJ the Musical I felt like I was transformed to another place. The production does what it needed to do. So many bright lights. I do suggest if loud sounds are an issue or if you have kids who are sensitive bring their headphones or Loops. Trust me I had mine on and no one even knew. Either way I was able to be present and enjoy all the action.
Transitions between the Michaels
I loved how effortlessly they took us from a young, youthful to a more present-day MJ. Each of them did what needed to be done and sang with everything that they needed to do. It is hard to try to even attempt hold a light to who we call the King of Pop. There will never be another. I love that they all had talent. This is not a karaoke performance. I really enjoyed each performer. Young MJ was played by Bane Griffith while Jacob Kai played middle MJ.
Overall, MJ the Musical is a musical dessert of everything that we love about MJ. The interesting part is that you are so engulfed in your love of MJ that it makes for a beautiful tribute for a beautiful life. You get to see MJ has human and not just simply an entertainer. Make sure you see it before it ends January 19. Thank you to Ensemble Arts Philly and the entire cast of MJ the Musical for having me and MJ’s greatest fan, my husband Marques.
