We have talked about mental health often here. it’s important as many of us deal with different levels of mental health often. With that being said, what we do in the Fall and as we press towards the holidays matter. So what are the small ways that you can continue to be mindful of yourself during this time?
Fall Retreat or Staycation
Having a holiday plan in place matters. There are so many who struggle with the holidays. The closer we get people are triggered with what to do, solo initiatives and more. If you are not quite into the full holiday takeover that is fine too. There are a number of reasons as to why you feel the way you do. You do not owe anyone an explanation. I would suggest in taking charge of your Fall staycation or retreat. For instance, as it gets colder it will be harder to get a good amount of sunlight. Be intentional with what you choose to do. Set your sights in changing your environment if you’re able to. It doesn’t have to be super big. Take a weekend away.
Light Therapy and Mental Health
There’s something about light therapy that I have found helps. At night I use a sound machine that has a blue light when I sleep. It sets the tone. I choose a different sound at night to whisk me away to sleep. From rain, wind, or even an ocean sound all of it helps. There are many machines that you can get. This helps with those who suffer with Seasonal Depression. Trust me you’re not alone. Consider adding light therapy to your regiment. You may find that it offers a temporary solution. Also make sure that even on gloomy days that you open your blinds in your home, apartment, or condo.
Infrared Sauna
I added this recently here in Philadelphia and they also offer this in other cities as well. My personal experience was deep. You get into a personal sauna that offers infrared technology. The lights helps to aid in different healing elements. This 45 minute (they also offer 15 and 30 minutes) help carve out me time, helped with my skin, and other areas too. I listened to a self help podcast while inside and brought a journal. It’s like an envelope of self care for under $100.
Home Retreat
We talked about going to a place like a hotel for a staycation or Fall retreats but you can create the same in your home. It may be hard to do if you live with someone else but if you live alone it’s a great way to change your home into a safe haven. You block out a weekend to get back to you. Bring in elements of rest, reading, writing, and more. Most of the time we fill our schedules with so much that taking out time for self feels uncomfortable. Being comfortable in your space is important and the Fall is the best time before the holiday rush and the New Year to set your intentions ahead of time. You are worthy of self care and me time.
Join a Book Club
This can be a great way to meet new people both in person or virtually. Being able to connect over a common book is great. You can speak about the diverse book offerings that matter to you. When you meet over a common book, you’re able to speak more about the book’s messaging in a safe space.
Animal Therapy
I took a Pilates and Pups class not only was the class helping me be around others, work my whole body, but the puppies were instant mood booster. What a great way to combine fitness and mental health all in one. I am sure you have heard of goat and pig yoga too. Spending time volunteering at an animal shelter is a way to give back of your time and spend time with animals as well. Please make sure that you do not take an animal home that doesn’t fit your lifestyle. For all of those who think it’s a great idea to purchase a loved one a animal as a gift this holiday season, consider if they have the capacity to care for it. Animals are often surrendered due to lack of obligation.
These are small offerings that can be done to start your Fall journey and get you on the journey to loving you. In addition to that learning how to take care of you as the weather changes. Be aware of you. Dedicate a journal during this time too. Patterns are usually what we don’t recognize. Having the ability to understand your patterns and triggers helps you equip yourself with a better plan of attack to healing.
