If you love the iconic movie you will love it on Broadway at the Kimmel Cultural Campus. Playing now until Sunday October 8th. Grab your friends, wear your pink, and make it a night you won’t forget.
What to Expect at Mean Girls
Get to the theater early to grab a Fetch Fizz, some swag, and get comfortable. This show is about 2 and a half hours long with a 15 minute intermission. It was a sea of pink with most understanding the assignment. There is plenty of swag to choose from. Thankful for Allied a Global Marketing that made sure I had plenty. I have a T-shirt, mug and some sweet treats. The treats are not available for purchase. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time to find your seats and get comfortable. I highly suggest seeing this as close as possible.
Is Mean Girls Suitable for Kids?
This is a personal preference. As a parent what I may allow you may not. The story stems around high school. So there are themes that align with high school students. The language is strong at moments. I personally have a high school freshman who I didn’t take since she was at a school event. The movie hit harder for me because of that. In addition, a younger child around the age of 10 may already have seen clips and more if they have access to TikTok. Many of iconic phrases are being used there.
Production of Mean Girls
I thought production was spot on and very close to the movie. I loved how they transformed the scenes in their most simplistic form. This allowed the audience to focus on the characters and their stories. It took you to high school for sure and all of the insecurities that follow.
Breakout Role: Ethan Jih-Cook
Every actor and actress brought their A-game to Mean Girls. However there was one Philadelphia native that stole the show for me. Ethan Jih-Cook who played Damian was the show for me. He definitely had main character energy from start to finish. Also it’s a great note to make that this was his first big role. He ate his performance. Everything about his performance was mesmerizing. Anytime he stepped on the stage the crowd went wild. One thing about him was he was the added sauce that was needed but it didn’t take away from the rest of the cast who were all outstanding.
Mean Girls Take Away
Again I feel as if this movie has more meaning since I have my own freshman. Seeing her start school and within less than a month deal with her own mean girl brought more meaning to me. The themes that I loved that were pushed was making sure while we teach girls their place that we also have some strong lessons for boys. It’s always the girls that have to watch what they wear and do while boys and men are never chastised for their bad behavior.
Lessons from Mean Girls
I hope every parent who has younger girls use the lessons learned in this production so they can stop green lighting their own mini mean girls too. Lastly the fact that being who you are and not trying to impress a boy or man was prevalent. Too many times girls and women are expected to water themselves down so they don’t come off too smart, too good, or too much pressure for boys or men to handle. In the moment when Cady plated by Natalie Shaw realized that I wanted to bring my daughter to the theatre to see it. Yes we have seen the movie and yes I will re-watch it with her.
This production of Mean Girls is not to be missed. The singing along is top tier. One of the voices that stood out to me the most was Janis played by Alexys Morera. Her vocals had me in a complete chokehold. Her vocal ability is outstanding. The entire cast was phenomenal and brought a sense of amazement to the story. Make sure you go and see it. It is playing at the Kimmel Cultural Campus until Sunday October 8th. Thank you to the Kimmel and Allied for having me. Congratulations to the entire cast and production on a job well done. Tickets available now.
