Quintessence Theatre Group presents Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw. A witty satire that is full of comedic timing, deep conversations on morality, war, and religious freedom.
Before you go to Quintessence Theatre
Do note that this production is about 3 hours long with one interlude and an intermission. Although it’s long in length it so well done that time flies. Be prepared for themes of war and even a brief violent confrontation. It is recommended for ages 16 and up however my 14 year old was with me and she was more than able to handle it. Some of the themes presented was well articulated and definitely will be a conversation piece afterwards. Get to the theatre at least 30 minutes before. This will give you time to park, have concessions, and enjoy an introduction that will take place at least 10 minutes before the start of the production.
Morality and Poverty
Can your morality be compromised if poverty presents itself?! Barbara Undershaft played by Melody Ladd finds herself testing this very premise. She does not prescribe to her father’s ideology of war and even can be considered detest his wealth. Her goal is to offer salvation to those who are in need coincidentally at the Salvation Army. Barbara is tested when like even today social services groups like the Salvation Army can’t function without the help of the communities it serves.
Is it better to hold your moral compass or do whatever you need to continue to serve the people?! Think about that in today’s time. Many of us are tested about what we hold deaf to us. Many times that ideology could possibly be compromised. This spiral of helping vs convenience sends her into an internal tailspin.
Religious Freedoms in Major Barbara
When a strong storm come to rattle the occupants of the Salvation Army names Bill Walker played by Lee Thomas Cortopassi. He is a hot head that has zero issues hitting on women. As he is looking for his girl he taunts Barbara. At first their interaction seems to be breaking Bill Walked down until the tables turn. The debate that in order to receive services you must become a Christian and subscribe to the teachings instead of helping without consequence.
Major Barbara Keeps Patron’s Attention
Again any production that lasts for 3 hours has to be done well enough not to lose its core audience. I’ve noticed some new features at Quintessence. I enjoyed the screens that are above the audience. When a definition needed to be explained it was easy to see it and apply it to our understanding. Production did an amazing job with making the stage an interactive one. Switching the attention and flipping around the scenes so both sides had equal viewing was helpful.
Major Barbara called into question what principles we all choose and the pathway to be right. The acting in this production is phenomenal. Also be prepared for the cast to walk the aisles. Thank you to Quintessence Theatre Group as well as Perpetual Motion PR for having me. You can see this production until October 29, 2023. Tickets are available
