The holidays are here and that means the debate on when to decorate and how is on everyone’s mind. One issue that is coming up is what to do if your home isn’t as aesthetic as some of the things you have seen online or on socials. We all for the most part desire to have our home look like it came out of a magazine. Those looks take money to pull off. Money may be tight but here are some tips to help you along your own journey.

Define what you feel aesthetic means to you

For instance I used to struggle with my home when I felt it wasn’t aesthetic enough. Then I do had to redefine what aesthetic meant to me. For instance my home when we moved in it had been repainted, carpets cleaned and we furnished it top to bottom with brand new furniture. Why did I think that my home wasn’t aesthetic? For one I had no decorative touches to the house. There was no one to blame for that but me. I hadn’t taken the time to add little touches to it. The clutter that had soon attempted to take over made me lose the desire to decorate as well.

Then one day I decided to clear the clutter that was leftover from when my mother in law was here and add little touches. Soon instead of seeing what my home wasn’t I took the joy in what was.

Comparison is the theft of joy

Sometimes we look at our portion and compare it to others. This in itself will make you talk down on you blessings. For instance I have a tree that I decorate for all major holidays. this added a sense of cozy to the home. However if I go online and see someone with better natural lighting in theris-does that mean my house has no value? Of course not. When you compare what you have to others it’s always something that will stand out more. It’s your job to learn to be appreciative of what you have. For instance you may see a car that looks better than yours. However for your lifestyle taking on a car payment may not be in the cards for you. So being envious on what others have will make you less appreciative of what you have.

Here are some tips on how I made my space more cozy:

  • Clean up your space. Get rid of old things that no longer serve you. Declutter
  • Take each space and ask yourself what you want to see in that space if money wasn’t a hinderance. Then look at what you think you want and ask yourself how you can find alternatives to it
  • Research ways to get what you want at a fraction of the price.
  • Start small and work your way up
  • I started at places like Dollar General until I could go to Home Goods and more

Holiday Coziness

Now that we are in the holiday rush consider as you look at decorative things at what makes sense for your space. It’s like shopping for a tree. You have to be mindful of what fits in your world. I have a 7.5 feet tree in my home that I got from King of Christmas. The tree is beautiful in every way. However I had to measure because the tree topper that I have on their thankfully was able to be clipped to the front instead of being placed on the front. Why? I didn’t take into account the size of the tree with the decor of the home.

Textures matter and can turn a house from basic Christmas to luxury. For instance as a kid we always got round ornaments. However if you want your tree to look lavish, play with texture as well as the sizing of the ornaments. For instance this year I plan to add super large ornaments that can be purchased individually to go with the ones I already have.

Ways around your Space-Holiday Edition

Have you see those expensive looking coffee bars that people have in their house? Did you know you could do the same thing but make it work for your space. Instead of a thousand and one ingredients, pick 3 and get the containers to hold it. Grab a decorative tray and add those and your coffee accessories on it. Add a sign or two from the dollar store that talks about coffee and before you know it, you would have created a coffee nook for the fraction of the price.

Again clean up your space and do it often. Having a clean home makes the difference with aesthetics. You might not be able to get every gadget or widget that comes out. Get rid of clutter. Containers also make your home look more organized. Stay within your budget and do like my mom taught me, grab a few pieces ever so often until you have what you need. Consider textures and sizing to make your home look more aesthetic for the holidays. Don’t let what you have or feel like you lack overshadow the fact that someone else desires the portion you complain about. You get to define your space. Also the holidays shouldn’t ever have you do things that takes you out of budget.
