If you are looking for a musical that pulls on the heart strings, a true story, beautifully composed and entangled with the human spirit, Come From Away is your must go see. Crafted with heart and soul it takes us back to the horrific time when September 11th happened. Over 7000 passengers were ordered to be grounded in Newfoundland town of Gander. The way that the town pulled together to show love and compassion is unlike anything I have ever seen.
What to know before seeing Come From Away
The production is not long. It ends tomorrow. The show is about an hour and 40 minutes long with no intermission. Do not miss the opening number. The show does have some strong language and adult themes so it may not be suitable for a younger audience. The lobby will have refreshments that you can enjoy during the show. I got to the theater about 30 minutes before but in the area about an hour ahead. Traffic being Super Bowl weekend is heavier than normal. Plan accordingly. To lessen my wait time I enjoyed a cocktail at Garces Trading Co inside of the Kimmel before walking less than 2 minutes down to the show. As of the time of the release of this blog, Kimmel has experienced an attack on their website. If you want to see the show please come to the box office and get a ticket.
Come from Away Beautiful Musical Component
I love musicals especially when the talent is strong. There’s no denying the talent ing from the musicians to the singers. I was blown away. I think the story definitely needed the strong musical component as a story telling mechanism. The story of the passengers being grounded was heavy at times. These passengers just like many during September 11th were struggling to grable with real life heartache. Many of them hadn’t known what happened to their own family. They needed supplies for survival as this unexpected chain of events would break and strengthen them in this new founded community.
Lessons on Community
One thing that we as humans find that in times of struggle you really get to see what people are made of. To see the community who had no idea what they were in for pull resources together in a matter of moments to assist is so beautiful. We hear so much of division that we forget that there are some good souls out there. I liked how in Come from Away they still showcased the times that the human story might be pressed. When James Earl Jones II character stated that he was asked to take grills and discovered that no one would automatically assume that since he was Black that he was stealing-was phenomenal. How many times could that happen in the United States and someone not die from that experience?
Community sharing and caring is something that I hope we can find again. So many stay to themselves and rarely know their neighbors name let alone be willing to come together to help strangers. Humanity needs a shake up and Come from Away was the demonstration of that.
Emotionally Charged
With September 11th being the backdrop of this story it is emotionally charged. There was a woman in our row that quietly cried as the clammer of the grounding of the planes happened. Without knowing her story everyone in our row checked on her to ensure that she was okay. Remember September 11th changed the way that we fly. For some who stepped up to help in the United States it changed them forever. Families were separated and sadly not put back together in the same way that they left one another. Come from Away is the story that I feel we don’t always hear about yet we need.
Every actor and actress in this play brought so much heart and energy. Seeing how they layered those emotions was outstanding. It was standing ovation worthy. I loved at the end how the musicians just played. Everyone in the theatre came together to dance. Such a great ending and a way to showcase unity. It didn’t matter your background or your story in that moment we were simply humans enjoying a shared experience and having a light moment that we all need from time to time.
