The Chinese Lantern Festival is back, and it is a glorious to behold. This was the first time attending. It was always on my to do list but by the time I got around to going it would be over. So,this year I was honored not only to go but be asked to cover it. Here is what to expect, what to eat, and what to do while you are at the Chinese Lantern Festival.
What to Expect
There is a lot of culture to take in. From the décor, food, and more it was an amazing time for people of all ages. The theme this year is let’s celebrate “wild.” They took on this large undertaking and, in my opinion, did well. Be prepared to walk in and have your eyes glow. Why? The colors and the lights depending on when you go will be mesmerizing. There are plenty of places to eat, hear music, live shows, and more. Wear comfortable shoes so you can take in all the sights without discomfort.
As you walk from moment to moment take it all in. It is a lot. Go slowly so you don’t miss anything. There will be something you see differently every time you come.
The Lights of it all
There are many LED lights that illuminates each thing you see. From the dragon, flowers, insects, and more that you will see. The lights are one of the best parts. You can find a spot in the middle and turn around and take it all in. I respect the Hanart Culture as they took on this brightly colored world. You may be in Philadelphia but at the Chinese Lantern Festival transports you to a new world. Don’t forget to see the 100 yard long Chinese Dragon. You can’t help but see it. My pro tip is to come around 6pm so you can experience the turning of the lights. The darker it gets the more illuminous it would be. Also, the lanterns are on beautiful display that depict the 4 seasons.
Franklin Square
Within the Chinese Lantern is the awe of the Franklin Square. There is the carousel, mini golf, and so much more for activities. So, you will be able to keep the kids entertained. The water show that happens is even more luminous as you see the colors of the Lantern Festival. The carousel is always a crowd pleaser.
What to Eat?
There are many options for all. From meat eaters to vegans too and the food is good. So of course, I ate, and tried many options to bring you what you should eat and enjoy. Let’s start with Oishii. This is an Asian inspired menu with beef Bao, chicken satay, and much more. Here are the things you should focus on:
Oishii
• Chicken Satay
• Meatball (pro tip: ask for the spicy sauce to be mixed with the sweet teriyaki sauce)
• Cloud Cup served in a fresh coconut
• Fresh Ears of Corn
Square Burger
• Big Ben burger which can be served with both American and cheddar cheese
• Waffle Fries
• The Original Cake Shake made with Krimpets, Caramel sauce, and ice cream
HunnyPie
This is your pizza spot. I loved this place. They make vegan and regular option pizza. The pizza is personal sized. This is a great spot to grab for the kids. The owners and workers there were some of the nicest I had experienced. If you feel overfed grab a pizza to go.
Humpty’s Dumplings
These dumplings are magical. They have vegan and non-vegan options. The dumplings were good. Also the cheeseburger dumplings are vegan and are delicious in every way. They come in 3 for $10 or 5 for $15.
Sang Kee
This is where you can get noodles and more. It is delicious. My husband got the Teriyaki Grill chicken combination. The combination has fried rice and vegetables. Sang Kee’s service is great and do not leave without getting the whole pineapple smoothies. It is pureed into the pineapple itself.
Let’s talk about Chinese Lantern Festival Drinks
The Lotus Cocktail menu is by far one of the best festival bars I have seen that wasn’t inside of VIP. Do not miss this. The flavors are too good. My favorite is the Lychee Frozen Lemonade. It’s pink, delicious, and doesn’t lack alcohol. You will fall in love. Honorable mentions: Green Dragon, Hive, and the Ming River Mule. No matter what you get you will love it. The service was great too.
So, you can get the culture, enjoy good food and be your own foodie, and enjoy the sights. Thank you to the Chinese Lantern Festival and En Route Marketing for having me. Get your tickets now.
