Mental Wellness and Self Care Queen

Friday Shapiro

Happy Black History month. You know that we celebrate it all year long. For those who celebrate the contributions of Black people in February there are many things you can do in the city of Philadelphia and more. In Philadelphia there is the James Forten Exhibit inside of the Museum of American Revolution.

Tuskegee Airman

We had the honor of being in the presence of the Tuskegee Airman. It was such a blessing. I would have never thought I would ever meet them. The ones present were Eugene J. Richardson Jr. and Nathan O. Thomas. Both men looked so regal as they greeted Governor Josh Shapiro. I was taken back when I walked in and seen them. I knew who they were as soon as I walked in. They were pleasant and smiled and took in the day just like I did.

Who is James Forten?

James Forten was born September 2, 1766. He was a businessman and abolitionist. He worked under Robert Bridges, Philadelphia sail maker after he was released from the British and sent to Jersey. After Bridges passed, Forten took over. He became wealthy and used his riches for social justice and social work in Philadelphia. The Museum of American Revolution has an exhibit to honor him. It’s a massive exhibit and beautiful to see. The exhibit opens on February 11th. There is quite a lot to see while there for the entire family.

Before you go to the Museum of American Revolution

The exhibit is for all ages. There are many options for tickets. Individual or family yearly passes can also be purchased. The museum has a lot of events. It’s worth getting a yearly pass. If you have an Access card you can get a yearly family pass and I highly suggest you do. There is ample parking lots available. I spent about $22 dollars and that was for over 4 hours. Street parking is limited.

If you have a stroller there are plenty of elevator space. In addition a coat rack to store your coats at your own discretion. The tour is on your own pace and there’s a gift shop to purchase souvenirs as well. It’s a beautiful space and if you love learning about all kinds of history it’s the best place to be.

Meeting Governor Shapiro

I was personally invited to meet him and attend this event. What an honor. In addition the Governor’s staff went above and beyond to make the visit one that I won’t forget. I had the opportunity to tell him about some of my initiatives surrounding mental health and wellness. I look forward to bringing some of those ideas to life. We had a private meeting and he and his wife and son treated us well.

Governor Shapiro has always been about the people when he was the Attorney Governor. I personally have sought out his office to help me with an issue and it was resolved well. Now seeing him in office as the Governor I know he will make a lot of changes that makes sense. I look forward to seeing what he does during his time in office.

Black History Month Events

There are plenty of events to pay attention to in Philadelphia. On February 11th there is the 31st Annual African American Book Fair. During this time there will be over 20 Black Authors present to talk about the books they have written and more. It’s free and bring held at the PA Convention Center from 1-4. If you have never been be prepared to be impressed. As an avid reader I’ve never seen myself depicted in stories. Our kids are now growing up seeing characters look like them as well as touch on stories of inspiration.

Here are some more events to look into thanks to Visit Philly for making the list!
